Christopher’s Trike: A Case Study
13 year old Christopher lives with his Mum, Dad and brothers in Sheffield. According to his mum, his favourite things are singing, television (Bob the Builder, Balamory and The Tweenies) and crisps!
Christopher has Global Developmental Delay and weakness in his muscles. Last year his family applied to Whizz-Kidz so that he could have the fun and freedom of independent mobility and, through the exercise a trike provides, improve the strength of his leg muscles.
Adapted tricycles are outside of NHS funding criteria but through the incredible support of The Priority Trust, Whizz-Kidz was able to provide Christopher with an adapted tricycle at the end of January 2009. Now he can get around on his own and enjoy trips to the park to play without being pushed around by Mum and Dad.
Talking about the difference the trike had made, Christopher’s Mum said:
“Christopher really loves his trike, it’s given him a sense of freedom out of his wheelchair and helped build his confidence in that he’s ‘doing something for himself’. It’s also helps with exercising his muscles in a fun and liberating way.”
